Unique Push-Pull Characteristics

When it comes to industrial casters, there is a fine balance between achieving heavy carrying capacities and a low push-pull force while keeping noise levels in a safe range. Hard wheels, such as steel or phenolic provide an easy solution to heavy loads, but are extremely noisy, and can damage floors.

Recently, we were asked to bid on designing and building a cart for an automobile manufacturer with unique push-pull characteristics and very demanding requirements:

  • The cart was to carry a 4,000 pound payload
  • Achieve a push-pull rating of no more than 45 pounds
  • Operational noise level at 75 decibels

We have gained a reputation for providing solutions to industrial problems. With a team of experienced engineers, Caster addresses all angles of an application, and meets the high demands of industrial settings.

“Based on what we know from our research/testing and engineering knowledge, we were able to meet all three requirements,” said Alex Harden, engineer at Caster Concepts.

The cart was designed to carry 4,000 pounds of crankshafts, and is to be moved by a single person once it reaches its destination. Polyurethane wheels were utilized because they are quiet when moved, yet still able to maintain working order under a high weight load.

Harden said “the hope is that the company will see the benefit of having these carts in other facilities. The cart will return a cost saving due to the high carrying capacity compared to the previously utilized carts. Therefore the company can buy fewer carts and still move the same amount of product.”
